Givin’ thanks early…

Hey, so it’s not Thanksgiving yet.  Our tree is already up any way.  It has been for over a week.  No joke.

1.  Ashlynn’s allergist believes she will outgrow her allergies!  (Still years away but there’s hope.  Her’s are dairy/egg …anaphylactic if you didn’t know.  I’ve never taken her to get ice cream.  She can’t eat it.)  He also said they have medicine that could be out in 10 years that will cure food allergies!  (Maybe it was the lack of sleep but my eyes started leaking this salty substance at the news.)

2.  I needed a transportation hookup.  I sold my car to ease the squeeze right now.  My neighbor blessed me in a big way.

3.  I love music.  U2, Coldplay, Pearl Jam, Hillsong United, Audioslave, Jon Foreman, Norah Jones…I’m all over the place.  Found a CD on itunes that totally took me back to college days.  Gotta love the internet.

4.  This guy makes me laugh, hard.

I want your opinion…

Faithful blog readers…

The voice of this blog may be zeroing in on an issue I’m very passionate about.  Up until now, I blogged what I was feeling.  There wasn’t much strategy.  It was for me to have an outlet for expression.  I’ve had a growing desire over the last few weeks to focus the voice of this blog to about 20% personal stuff and 80% on identity formation.  Here’s where I need your opinion…

  • React to the statements below…agree/disagree, etc
  • Rank them in order of importance for yourself or others

If you feel free enough you can click on comments on the actual site.  If not shoot me an email or just click reply if you subscribe.

a.  When I go to church I leave feeling like I don’t measure up.

b.  I believe God is real but I don’t experience Him very often.

c.  If “they” knew the real me, “they” would say I was a bad Christian.

Ok, let me have it…

Updates and such…

1. Had a great weekend. Got to speak at the church I pastored in Indiana as they dedicated their new building.
2. I got to see up close and personal why the SBConvention is sliding into non-existence. (Nothing to do with the church there.)
3. We drove by our old house on Lick Creek Road. We came home to Licking County. And we passed Big Bone Lick Park on the way. Who’s doing the naming in this country? And what is our family’s connection to the word “Lick”? Is God trying to reveal something?
4. I got some great clarity in conversation with a friend today.
5. And I haven’t been a very good dad or husband today. This summer and fall were awesome. Soakin’ up the moments and lovin’ life. The stress of some of our circumstances distract me more than I’d like. Say a prayer for me would you?

Maybe you need some permission today.  Watch this.  Stretch your inspirations.  You’ll be glad you did.

I receive a weekly email that linked to this medium-sized article.  I don’t agree with everything in the article but it is extremely helpful in understanding my generation.  The line about Happy Meals and the shuttle explosion was right-on.  Read away if you want to understand some of the shifts happening in our society.

2 poems from Stephen Crane, just because…

A man saw a ball of gold in the sky;
He climbed for it,
And eventually he achieved it –
It was clay.
Now this is the strange part:
When the man went to the earth
And looked again,
Lo, there was the ball of gold.
Now this is the strange part:
It was a ball of gold.
Aye, by the heavens, it was a ball of gold.

Passage 35 from The Black Riders and Other Lines (1895)

I saw a man pursuing the horizon;
Round and round they sped.
I was disturbed at this;
I accosted the man.
“It is futile,” I said,
“You can never -”

“You lie,” he cried,
And ran on.

about me

Welcome to my little part of the webbed world. I’m the senior pastor of Discovery Church (www.dcclive.com) and I have a spiritual counseling/direction and coaching ministry. At night I try to be a couch potato and entrepreneur but my young children won’t let it happen. From leadership rants to the beauty of my wife and 3 little girls expect this blog to be as paradoxical as my personality. Oh yeah, I’m speaking for myself on this blog and no one else.
